Our History

Real-world data (RWD) in Japan has been evolving steadily and continuously. In addition, we are required to respond to changes in the utilization of this data.

Dr. Keiko Asao, our company’s president, has served as a physician in Japan and the US, specializing in internal medicine, diabetes, and endocrine disorders and continued epidemiological research, especially in diabetes and obesity. Through her tenure as an academic and practicing physician, she has learned from interactions with many researchers and conducted analyses of large-scale cohort studies and national survey data, reviews of medical charts, and clinical research. Dr. Asao established Kappa Medical K.K. after working for pharmaceutical companies and a healthcare consulting firm in Japan.

At Kappa Medical K.K., we want to encourage the most appropriate and effective use of RWD in a free and open manner while keeping to a solid scientific foundation. Even when tackling unprecedented challenges, we will use RWD in a broader, timely, and effective manner.

Origin of the Company Name

The company name, Kappa Medical, was inspired by the Japanese mythical water-dwelling creature known as a kappa. In Japanese folklore, kappa are water spirits that live in rivers and lakes and are often thought to be mischievous, but they are also known to have passed on medicinal herbs and medical knowledge to humans.

At Kappa Medical, we have incorporated the spirit of the kappa, with its freethinking and interest in medicine and drugs, as a symbolic element into our company name. This spirit is connected to our mission of promoting new ways of using real-world data while maintaining a solid scientific foundation.
